Neighborhood Tutoring Teams

It takes a village to raise a child. Be part of yours.

Searching for walking-distance support for your child?

Looking to get involved as a local neighborhood tutor?

Imagine…

Imagine 2 or 3 neighborhood adults working with 4-6 public school students between ages 7 & 17.

  • They meet in a safe space – a library, park, church, rec center.
  • Two or 3 sessions a week, 1-3 hours each.
  • Begin with a snack. Take frequent breaks for fun activities.
  • Give kids time and space to enjoy their summers – but also help them with their reading or academics!
  • All adults have background clearances.

This is what we imagine the Neighborhood Tutoring Teams to look like.

Ready to get started as a volunteer or sign up a child? Want to learn more?  Fill out the short form(s) below and we’ll be in contact in a few days.

Where our teams Are

A man in a teal shirt hands a white device to two girls in purple shirts as they examine plant leaves in a sunny park.
We currently have access to set up volunteers and serve youth in:
  • Shaw/U St
  • Petworth/Mt Pleasant
  • Ward 8 (Congress Heights/Anacostia)
  • NoMa/Trinidad
  • Capitol Hill
If none of these neighborhoods are a viable option, please let us know through ayomide@dctutormentor.org so we can better understand where needs and volunteer availability exist.

Application & onboarding Process

For Volunteers

Volunteers: Getting Started

  • Step 2: Interview
    • Our team will reach out to schedule a 30-minute virtual interview to better understand your availability and interests, share onboarding and programming information, and give you a chance to ask us any questions!
  • Step 3: Onboarding Clearance Materials
    • If you’re a good fit for one of our teams, you’ll receive an email to complete three tasks:
      • 1) Go through the DCPS background clearance process | This includes an online form and a free, in-person fingerprint session. You may be required to submit a tuberculosis test result pending their risk assessment on the online form. We must receive a CERTIFIED copy of your clearance once this step is completed.
      • 2) Complete the Mandated Reporter Training Guide | This is a 2-hour asynchronous session, and can be completed at the volunteer’s pace! We must receive CERTIFICATE of Completion of the training once this step is completed.
      • 3) Review and sign the NTT Volunteer Statement of Understanding
    • After receiving both clearance and training documents, you’ll be granted access to the NTT Orientation Materials folder to complete asynchronous training at your own pace!
  • Step 5: Orientation Session
    • The volunteer will be invited to join a 1h 15m virtual orientation session at a later specified date hosted by NTT admin to:
      • Refresh asynchronous training materials, encourage reflection
      • Familiarise themselves with neighborhood team members, verify meeting details (meeting schedule, location)
      • Discussing recommendations for first 1-3 sessions & important measures to note including student drop-off/pick-up
      • Familiarize them with StudyAK Education Platform and DCPS Common Core Standards
    • Note: Orientation Sessions are usually scheduled once a month – Saturday/Sundays best thus far
  • Final – Step 6: Post Orientation Details; Placement
    • Admin will confirm tutor-student placement within 1-2 weeks of orientation session with the following details:
      • Student details (Name, Grade, Subject)
      • Caregiver details (Contact)
      • Student Support Form for Caregivers to obtain school assessment/assignment details

Volunteers are ready for sessions!

Average timeline from Step 1-6 is about 1 month, with completion of clearance materials being the longest step.

For Caregivers / Students

Step 1: Complete our student application: Student Application/Solicitud de Estudiante! Intake can also occur over the phone if preferred

Step 2: Connect With Our Team

Once completed the forms above, our team will reach out to discuss or understand better any outstanding details before pairing your student with a group.

Step 3: Sign Documentation

Our team will share the Student/Caregiver Statement of Understanding to clarify expectations and guidelines for tutoring under NTT.

Step 4: Get Placed With a Team!

  • Once a group in the student’s neighborhood is formed and there is an available, suitable volunteer, the caregiver or student(s) will be notified of the group’s meeting details. Caregivers may be onsite for the first tutoring session and beyond.
  • Our team will confirm tutor-student placement with the following details:
    • Tutor details (Name, Contact, 1-2 sentences on their background)
    • Student & Caregiver details (Contact)
    • Student Support Form for Caregivers to obtain school assessment/assignment details
  • If you/your student’s availability does not match volunteer availability, you will be placed on our waiting list as we onboard other volunteers in your neighborhood. This wait can take up to a few months, but we will keep you updated!
